Weaver, Silas James 1844-1927
The death took place on Thursday April 28th at Myttons, Castlemorton, of Mr Silas James Weaver, formerly of Brickland Farm, Castlemorton. He was in his 83rd year. He came of a family know to have been settled in Castlemorton nearly 200 years ago. Mr Weaver was for any years overseer and also a trustee of the Parish Charities, and was a member of the first Parish Council., with Messrs Cazalet (Chairman), William V Grey and John Whittle and the late Messrs Henry James Wilcox (Vice Chairman) , Henry Ball, John Charlton Colston, William Cox, Henry Fowler and E Walters (Clerk). The body thus constituted so gained the confidence of local landowners that they secured the grant of 170 acres of land for allotments. Later Mr Weaver was unanimously appointed chairman, a position he held for many years, and subsequently the acreage was increased to 300. At that time Castlemorton Parish Council held the leading position throughout England for the provision of allotments and smallholdings. Mr Weaver, with Mr Cazalet, Wilcox and Elias Walters founded a Credit Land Bank in Castlemorton. It had a membership of 30 and gave loans of up to £10 to pay for stock, or the first ploughing and seeding of allotment land secured by the Council.
At a contested election in 1910, Mr Weaver was returned at the head of the poll, but most of his friend and supporters were defeated and guidance of the affairs of the parish passed into other hands. Shortly afterwards, a bad accent to his head caused the retirement of Mr Weaver from active public work.
In politics, he was a Liberal. He was for many years vice president of South Worcestershire Liberal Association and chairman the polling district.
Born of Church of England parents, he held broadminded views on the opinions of others and when the Nonconformists of the neighbourhood found themselves at a loss for a meeting place, Mr Weaver offered them the choice of two sites on his freehold land, on long lease at a nominal years charge which he always returned to the funds of the building erected.
